A modern approach to outdoor and active lifestyle photography in 2026

Here’s my current motto, and honestly, it’s become a creative filter for almost every project I take on: visuals that feel lived-in, not staged.

If you know me, you know I’m extremely type A. I love a tight production plan, clear creative direction, and a schedule that actually respects daylight, weather, and human energy. But the real magic doesn’t happen when everything goes exactly according to plan. It happens when there’s room for discovery baked into the process.

Where strategy leaves space for instinct

On set, I treat structure as a launchpad, not a cage. Strong art direction, thoughtful shot lists, and clear goals give everyone confidence. From there, I intentionally leave space to blur the line between direction and intuition. That’s where real moments show up, the kind that can’t be storyboarded but always elevate a campaign.

This balance is especially important in commercial outdoor photography, where audiences are incredibly good at spotting what feels forced. Today’s best active lifestyle campaigns don’t just show the product, they show how it actually lives in the world.

Case study: S25 with Black Diamond Equipment

For my Spring 2025 campaign with Black Diamond Equipment, I leaned hard into this idea. I was hired in the Director of Photography Role to shoot a 1 minute anthem video for Black Diamond’s Spring Campaign. Alongside my video and the polished hero imagery, I handed the talent twelve disposable cameras and told them to go ham. No rules, no prompts, no “make sure you get the logo.” Just intuition.

The goal wasn’t chaos for chaos’ sake. It was to invite perspective from inside the experience, athlete-led, imperfect, human. Later, we wove those images, along with scanned art and mixed-media elements, into the final campaign narrative. The contrast between refined production and raw capture gave the work texture and honesty.

Why this approach works in 2026

In an era of AI-driven search, algorithmic feeds, and increasingly savvy audiences, authenticity isn’t a buzzword, it’s a differentiator. Brands that stand out are the ones willing to trust the process, trust their collaborators, and let real moments coexist with high-end production.
